Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! I will be teaching special education, coordinating the RtI program, and giving interventions at Limestone Walters. I am so excited because I love working with all the students!
Do not be alarmed if your student needs interventions. It is the teachers' way of being proactive so your student does not fall behind in the curriculum.
If my student needs interventions what does that mean?
At the beginning of the school year, the middle of the school year, and the end of the school year, all students at L-W are given Aimsweb assessments in reading fluency and math comprehension. The assessments are scored and then compared to researched based norms. If students are not at the 45th percentile or higher, interventions are considered to get to that level.
What are interventions?
Interventions are research based programs and strategies that are used to improve students' knowledge in the deficient skills. They can be computer based, paper based, or just new concepts to use in everyday learning. Tier II interventions are usually given in small groups, for about 20 mins, 3 times a week. If students need more help, Tier III interventions are given in addition to Tier II. Tier II interventions are more intensive and usually given everyday.
Where are the interventions given?
Anywhere! They can be given in small groups in the classroom, resource room, or one-on-one in various settings. Anyone trained can do the interventions.
How do I know that the interventions are working?
Students given interventions are monitored on a weekly to biweekly basis to make sure the intervention is promoting student growth. If the student is not progressing toward the goal, the intervention may need to be used more frequently or changed.
Will my student even get out of interventions?
The goal is to get to the 45th percentile on Aimsweb based assessments. If your student meets or surpasses that, interventions may be stopped. However, some students can only maintain that by receiving additional help.
What are those tiers and that triangle thing?
In an ideal classroom, 80% of students should be at the 45th percentile or above. That's considered Tier 1, and those students get the general classroom teaching. If less than 80% of the class is meeting that goal, the teacher should be addressing that in the curriculum. 15% should need need Tier II interventions, and 5% may need Tier II interventions and intensive Tier III interventions.
